Let’s be honest, shirt screen printing is frickin cool. Making my own t-shirt designs has been a total blast. My family has already asked me to make the official t-shirt for our next family reunion.
I’ve even started making money at it too! I make t-shirts for a restaurant down the street. I charge them a buck less than the next guy… and the best thing is I do it all from the comfort of my own home!
But where do you start? Do you take screen printing classes? Probably not since they’re few and far between. Most are offered as part of a really expensive program.
And besides, the whole point of making a few of your own tees is to save money!
The screen printing process (or silk screen t shirt printing as it is also called) is a actually very simple once you learn the basics.
At this point, you probably know a few things about it, but without knowing all the steps on how to do screen printing it is easy to get very frustrated. BUT it doesn’t have to be!
Here are the simple screen printing how to steps to screen print tee shirts:
* Create your art work
* Print your art work onto a transparency
* Degrease your silk screen, let it dry
* Coat your silk screen with emulsion, let it dry
* Position your transparency onto your silk screen with the dried emulsion
* Expose the silk screen to UV light to “burn in” or “cure” your design
* Remove uncured emulsion with water to reveal your design, let it dry
* Tape edges of silk screen and parts where emulsion didn’t stick to screen
* Attach silk screen to screen printer
* Position t-shirt
* Place ink on screen
* Print t-shirt!
* Dry ink on t-shirt with heat
* Wear t-shirt and bask in your coolness
